St. Matthew's United Church of Christ
Our Heritage
The United Church of Christ (UCC) came into being in 1957 with the union of two Protestant denominations; The Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. Each of these was, in turn, the result of a union of two earlier denominations. Our theological heritage believes the Bible is the authoritative witness to the Word of God. We also claim the Creeds of the Ecumenical Councils and the Confessions of the Reformation. The UCC has roots in "the covenantal tradition"-meaning there is no centralized authority or hierarchy that can impose any doctrine or form of worship on its members. Christ alone is the head of the church. We seek a balance between freedom of conscience and accountability to the apostolic faith. Therefore, we believe the historic creeds and confessions of our ancestors are testimonies, but not tests of faith.
 | Our Mission St. Matthew's is building relationships with God's love. We believe that people are the church; the building is where the church meets. This means that the building is not only the house of God, but the home of the church. We seek to carry out his mission by the power of the Holy Spirit who is calling us to build relationships with Christians in other fellowships and people of good will in our community. Christian Education Christian Education is for members and friends of all ages. We have a loving and dedicated team of teachers. Sunday School is offered to persons of all ages ranging from the very young to adult. We have Jr. and Sr. High Youth Groups and we offer weekly adult studies which are listed in the weekly bulletin and monthly Messenger. Knowledge of the Bible is not required for our studies. We simply invite you to come with an open heart and mind. At St. Matthew's, the relationships we build are as important as the knowledge we learn. Our Worship Schedule Summer Worship (Father's Day through Labor Day) is at 9 AM and 10 AM The 9AM service is geared towards children. On the Sunday following Labor Day, the church schedule changes. Fellowship and Sunday School begin at 9:30. Worship is at 10:30. |
